Liz has long been fascinated with the questions: what makes a group
healthy? What processes encourage productive and satisfying meetings?
How can an organization or community build its capacity to succeed at
both reaching its goals and supporting its human resources?
To
learn more, she got a Bachelor's degree in Organizational
Communication, and went on to a Masters program that explored
communication in interpersonal, small group, organizational, and
intercultural contexts. She also studied adult education methods, and
discovered her passion for teaching.
She has taught many
university classes in interpersonal, small group, organizational, and
nonverbal communication, as well as conflict, public speaking, and
public relations.
She did some corporate training, specializing in continuous improvement team development.
Her professional education has included:
200 hours of training with Tree Bressen on
facilitation, which included both general principles and practice in
meeting design and facilitation in six different cohousing
communities.
200 hours of training in the Genuine Contact
program. She is now certified to both provide consulting services and
also teach the program to others. It emphasizes tapping the collective
wisdom of an organization, and uses a facilitation style that invites
the whole person--mind, spirit, heart and intuition--to participate in
the work being done.
24 hours of training Community at Work's excellent Group Facilitation Skills workshop.
Since
March of 2007, Liz has been volunteering at a local cohousing
community. She has been coaching an ad hoc committee that wants to
improve the communication where they live. The committee has not only
developed their design and facilitation skills, but they have also
become a high-performance team.
She also chaired a group concerned with oil depletion issues for two years, and worked on the StepItUp campaign, which promotes policy to address climate change. Her vision includes working with communities who are grappling with sustainability issues.
